This year’s International Conference for Dublin Core and Metadata Applications aims to explore the Semantic Web

Event

DC-2009: International Conference on Dublin Core and Metadata Applications. 12-16 October 2009, Seoul, Korea.

The early-bird registration for DC-2009 to be held 12-16 October 2009 in Seoul, Korea, is now closed. On-line registration for the event at regular fees will remain open until 5 October.

Meta-what?

Metadata is information on information. The more info you have the better. But it needs to be organised and managed. In simple terms, Dublin Core consists of 15 metadata elements:

  1. Title
  2. Creator
  3. Subject
  4. Description
  5. Publisher
  6. Contributor
  7. Date
  8. Type
  9. Format
  10. Identifier
  11. Source
  12. Language
  13. Relation
  14. Coverage
  15. Rights

Why?

Metadata allows information to found, shared and managed more easily. It speeds up searching for information for end users.

Moreover, metadata can help to bridge the semantic gaps in web searches. It does this by providing information about how data is connected or related. Ultimately, these ‘data relationships’ can then be processed automatically, providing complex search operations.

This approach, called knowledge representation, is of special interest to the semantic web – which will be explored by Dublin Core at this year’s international conference.

Data for thought?

Something can be both metadata and data…
