First it was Jamie Oliver who decided to give it a go. And now Rio Ferdinand has decided that he will too.

The Rio-brand: a digital lifestyle magazine
The world of celebrity branding has reached a whole new level.
The digital magazine, Rio – developed by the publisher Made-Up Media – aims to “give a snapshot of the world that Rio inhabits and will be a reflection of his interests. Feature content will include celebrity interviews – we have interviewed 50 Cent and Mickey Rourke for the first issue” .
Whilst the idea is intriguing – and clever – it will be interesting to see how the content will pan out. I’m sure Rio is a dynamic and interesting person, but a whole magazine?! Once they’ve interviewed his celebrity friends, done a few articles about what Rio likes to wear, perhaps what he likes to eat and probably how he keeps fit, it’s going to turn into a digital diary. He should’ve got a blog first, perhaps?
It’s certainly caused a stir in the media news. Media Week’s digital editor, Rich Sutcliffe, has suggested a digital magazine about him.

David Cameron: the next magazine brand? I'm putting my bet on it....
So who’s next? It’s not going to stop with Jamie and Rio, and their proclaimations of masculinity and cooking.
I saw Coleen’s fragrance for £4.99 in the January sales. Perfumes are behind the branding times; it seems it’s all about having your own magazine now. Is this the next craze for magazine publishing?
If
David Cameron (possibly the
newest addition to celebrity Twittering) publishes his own magazine following this, you’ve only got yourselves to blame…..
The first issue of Rio will be published in February this year, with a further five editions planned after that.
